The Ranch Narrative From a Very Unique Perspective

By Jill Wolforth –

Several years ago, Coach Wolforth introduced a practice where staff members were assigned individual books related to their interests. They were expected to share their thoughts on the current chapter they were reading each week and discuss its relevance to our work at The Texas Baseball Ranch®.

This past year, we had an intern named Laila Marcia. She chose not to attend college immediately after high school and expressed an interest in entrepreneurship. Laila had a pleasant personality and enjoyed working with people, so we offered her an internship at The Ranch for a year.

For her reading assignments, Coach Wolforth focused Laila on topics related to hospitality and influencers. Since she spent a lot of time in the office and interacted with both current and potential clients, we continuously worked with her to understand the essence of The Ranch, which is more than just training pitchers.

During one of her readings, the concept of having both a company narrative and a personal narrative was discussed. As a result of this and our ongoing discussions about the information she shared on the phone, Coach Wolforth assigned Laila a project to articulate her understanding of The Ranch’s narrative.

She wrote:

The Ranch Narrative

The Texas Baseball Ranch is a baseball sanctuary.  It is a safe haven, in the sense that here you will be treated and evaluated as fairly and as uniquely as a unique individual should be.  It is especially a safe haven for families who have been misguided and overwhelmed with information, often told everything under the sun about their athlete that they are paralyzed, afraid of doing the wrong thing.  Afraid they will choose wrong and set their athlete way back, they simply don’t know how to take the first step.  We remove their worry and fear by teaching parents and athletes alike.  We understand that big goals and dreams need a strong support system.  We believe family is the backbone of that support system and our goal is to be an extension of that family.  Here we will learn together, meeting athletes at their level.  Here we work together, Parent, Athlete and Coach all towards the common goal of continuously getting your son 1% better.  Getting them to play at least one level higher than they otherwise would have had they not walked through our doors.  We will do this by taking the complexity of pitching and not only will we simplify it into digestible plans of action, but hyper personalize that plan like tailored denim, to each individual, ensuring they reach their maximum potential with maximum efficiency.  With us alongside the whole way through.

Laila did an outstanding job. It’s remarkable that a 20-year-old young woman with limited baseball experience was able to grasp and articulate these concepts after just one year with us. Laila completed her internship at the end of February, and when she left, she gifted Coach Wolforth and me a framed, signed picture of her writing. You can find it here at The Ranch whenever you visit.
