Baseball is known to have its ups and downs throughout the season that can take a toll on you mentally, make it seem like everything you try to do does not add up, or does not provide you with the rhythm you are looking for. This is where becoming precise can be very beneficial in your game and help you get into that groove much easier.
Unfortunately, where athletes often fail, especially at a younger age, is they do not have a set routine that they like to follow and/or do not know how to create one. It is oftentimes much easier to “follow the herd” of your team, simply doing what everyone else is doing because it seems to work for some and is “enough.” When taking a closer look at ELITE professional athletes from all major sports, you will find that each individual has their own style of preparation, which is very precise and consistent. With that being said, I believe there is no right or wrong way to go about this. These professionals have perfected what is their personal “touch” on their warm-ups. This helps them feel ready and removes all the stress and worry while they prepare for their game. The last thing you want to do while arriving for your own game is sit in frustration, or worry about how to get ready and what needs to be done to become locked in.
I encourage everyone who wants to become truly elite to sit down and map out exactly how your day looks on game days, what your preparation currently looks like, and how it can be changed to fit you individually (and become something you are precise and consistent with – just like the elites). If you go into each game knowing exactly what you are getting yourself into from square one, I find you are already putting yourself at an advantage (compared to those around you) and taking away unnecessary stress.
Find the Max Scherzer’s, Steph Curry’s, and Tiger Woods’s of the world, and watch/study them prior to a game or event. I genuinely believe it will leave clues as to why they are some of the best at what they do and will truly show you how precision can change your game.
