Whether you’re in the middle of your high school or college season or just beginning your professional season, all can feel very long and grueling. In my experience, here are a few things that helped me get through the season mentally and emotionally.
At the beginning of the season, the excitement and joy of starting another year can be unmatched. However, the “fizz” from the start of the season can begin to wear off, especially if you’re not in the right frame of mind throughout the year. Being present with every game, practice, pitch, rep, etc., can help prevent burnout. Not thinking too deeply about the days to come or the ones behind you can help throughout the year. Stay present at all times, both on and off of the baseball field.
Another thing that helped me was being 100% in tune whenever I was on the field and keeping my emotions from the field at the field. Personally, I struggled with internalizing the game. If I played poorly or practiced poorly, I would feel bad, and if I played well or practiced well, I would feel good. It’s important to leave your emotions out of it. This is especially important when you’re off the field to prevent a roller coaster of emotions. Trying to stay even keel throughout the year can help you mentally and emotionally during the course of the season. Now, I understand that is easier said than done. However, just like anything else, if you practice it more, you’ll only get better over time.
Having hobbies outside of baseball to help keep your mind off the sport can also be beneficial, whether it’s watching a TV show or listening to your favorite podcast. In my experience, building LEGOs® was something that was therapeutic for me and helped me be at ease. It was a unique hobby I had picked up, but it got my mind off the game for a while, and I would try to just be in the moment of what I was building.
Baseball can be a very mentally taxing game and the season can be a very mentally taxing season. Making sure you have certain things to fall back on in terms of hobbies and practices can help you enjoy the season more and also perform better throughout the year.
