What I’ve decided to write about this week not only applies to baseball in-season and out-of-season, but also to life in general. When I think back on when I played baseball, both in high school and college, I always look at it as “the good ol’ days”. This includes everything – from the road trips, to the bus drives, to the stays in hotels, to the practices, and all of the ups and downs in between.
During the season, it is very easy to lose track of the present and really be in the moment because you can be worrying about what’s going to happen next week, what’s going to happen if you don’t accomplish this, or what’s going to happen if you do win this series. It is easy to get caught up in thinking about “what ifs”, but it is very important to stay in the present for every single moment of your season. For you guys reading this, you will be at the beginning of your season, or about to begin your season, and I just want to remind you to really stay in the present and enjoy every minute. You can also learn from each moment, both on and off the field, as well as every negative and positive encounter.
Whether you’re a freshman in high school or you’re playing your final year(s) in college, I promise your career flies by. It’s the little things that I miss the most and that I truly cherish, so I really encourage you guys to enjoy the time that you’re spending with your teammates now as they may form long-lasting friendships. Unfortunately, at some point in your career, you’re going to have to hang them up… Make sure you’re not spending every present moment thinking about the future.
This year, I really challenge and encourage you guys to stay present, whether it is going bad, good, or even just being out with your teammates and having a good time. Don’t dwell too much on the past, and don’t think too much about the future and possibly rob yourself of the present. Stay in the moment and you’ll be setting yourself up for the best chance of success, both on and off the field!
