Plateaus and Patience

By Isaiah Trevino –

No matter what type of training you’re doing, you’re going to hit a plateau. Patience is what will help you get through it.

Whether your goal is to lose weight, gain muscle, or increase your velocity, plateaus are part of the process. In baseball, we see guys hit plateaus all the time when trying to increase their velocity. For those who don’t have patience or don’t understand that this will happen, it can be a tough pill to swallow.

Let’s break it down: if you gained, let’s say, five miles an hour in six months, you’d be throwing about 120 mph within a few years… which we all know is very, very unlikely.

For me, even though my baseball career is over, I still hit plateaus. Whether it’s my numbers in the gym, my weight staying the same on the scale, or even feeling stuck in other areas of life, I’ve learned that plateaus are inevitable.

The good news is that you get to choose how you respond.

You can look at it in two ways: you can be down and have a bad attitude about it, or you can look at it as an opportunity to grow, make adjustments, and learn. I had to make that choice throughout my baseball career, and I still make it today. Plateaus don’t disappear; they just start showing up differently. Be ready for them.

So, from a velocity-training standpoint, what do you do when you run into a plateau?

First, be patient. Understand that this is all part of the process, and you will eventually get past it.

Second, be honest with yourself about how your arm feels in terms of pain. If you have no pain, there’s no reason to stop pushing. However, if you do have pain, that could be contributing to your plateau and should be addressed.

Lastly, your body may simply need a different stimulus to get back on track and increase velocity.

Now, while I’ve used baseball and velocity as examples, this applies to every area of life. The key is recognizing that plateaus are normal and understanding that patience gets you through them.

While this takes time, it is important to learn to enjoy the process, even during plateaus. In the end, the breakthrough will feel that much sweeter.
