Patience and Learning During a Plateau

By Isaiah Trevino –

No matter what type of training you’re doing, you’re going to hit plateaus.

Patience is something that you will need to get through them.

With any training or goal—whether you’re trying to lose weight, gain weight, or gain velocity, you’re bound to run into some type of plateau. For a baseball-specific example, we see athletes hit plateaus all the time while working to gain velocity.

For those who don’t have patience or understand that this is a normal part of the process, it can be a tough pill to swallow. Let’s break it down: if you were to gain, let’s say, five miles an hour in six months, you’d be throwing about 120 mph in a few years! (And we all know that’s very, very unlikely.)

For myself, even though my baseball career is over, I still constantly run into plateaus. Whether it’s chasing numbers in the gym, weight staying the same on the scale, or even just feeling like you’re stuck in life—it is essential to acknowledge and understand that this will occur.

You can look at it two ways: you can be down and have a bad attitude about it, or you can look at it as an opportunity to grow, make adjustments, and learn. I had to do it in baseball, and still do it now. Plateaus will be there no matter where you are in life—be ready for them.

So, from a velocity-gaining standpoint—what do you do when you run into a plateau?

First, try to be patient. Understand that this is all part of the process, and you will get through it.

Second, be honest with yourself about how your arm feels. If you have no pain, there’s no reason to stop pushing. If you do have pain, then that might be a reason why you’re in a plateau.

Lastly, your body may require a new stimulus to get back on track and increase velocity.

Now, this baseball example is just one that I thought everyone would easily understand in the baseball world. However, plateaus can show up in every aspect of life—and it is important to recognize them and acknowledge that patience is necessary to navigate them.

While this takes time, it is important to learn to enjoy the process—even during plateaus. In the end, the breakthrough will feel that much sweeter.
