Having Patience During a Plateau

By Isaiah Trevino –

Plateaus and patience: You’re going to run into plateaus no matter what type of training you’re doing, and patience is something you’ll have to have in order to get through those plateaus.

With any type of training and/or goal, you’re bound to run into some kind of plateau. For a motor baseball-specific example, we see guys running into plateaus constantly when trying to gain velocity. For those who don’t have patience or understand that this will happen, it can be a tough pill to swallow. If we break it down, and you were to gain, let’s say, five mph in six months, then you will be throwing about 120 mph in a few years (which we all know is very, very unlikely).

So, from a velocity-gaining standpoint, what do you do when you run into a plateau?

The first thing you want to do is have some patience. Know that this is all part of the process, and you will eventually get past it. The second thing is to be honest with yourself and how your arm feels in terms of pain. If you have no pain, then there’s no reason you should stop pushing. However, if you do have some pain, then that might be a reason why you’re in a plateau. Lastly, your body may need a different stimulus to get back on track with increasing velocity.

Now, this baseball example is just one that I thought everyone would easily understand in the baseball world. However, plateaus can happen with everything in life, and it is important to recognize them and acknowledge that you need patience to push through.

While this takes time, it is important to remember to enjoy the process. In the end, it can make everything that much sweeter when you get through that plateau!
