Everyone reading this article wants to be their best at something. Whether that is the best baseball pitcher at their school, the best employee at their job, the best husband/wife, or any other goal they want to obtain. Regardless of what you want to be the best at, many people do not do everything they can to put themselves in that position. While it is impossible to give 100% effort 100% of the time, there is one simple step you can do to be more successful. What is that step? Watch the best do what they do.
I will start by using a baseball example to illustrate my point. If you are a baseball player trying to learn how to be a better pitcher, hitter, or defense player, the absolute best thing you can do is watch an elite player and see exactly what they do to be elite. For instance, if you are a lefty pitcher, watching someone like Tom Glavine, Randy Johnson, or Steve Carlton and figuring out why they were successful would be incredibly beneficial for you. This does not mean you need to copy their mechanics and throw exactly like them. That would almost certainly not help you very much, especially if you are a different size and build than those three guys. However, you should learn their mindset, approach, pre-game preparation, etc., and apply some of that to your game and see how it can make you better.
Now, a general example: at the Texas Baseball Ranch®, we are huge on mindsets. If you are unfamiliar, a “mindset” at the Ranch is working on mental toughness and leadership to create better players on and off the field. It generally entails watching a motivational video and then spending a few minutes talking or writing about what you got out of it. Mindsets are incredibly helpful as a baseball player, whether you are Justin Verlander or an 11-year-old Little Leaguer. They are also powerful for any individual as well. The topic does not need to necessarily be motivation either; it could be about financial advice or learning a new skill, for example. The key point is that whatever you want to learn, do, or become better at, watch the elite individuals/groups in that field and see how they succeed in it. My challenge for you: spend 10-20 minutes, five times a week, engrossing yourself in a topic of your choice and watching the best in whatever topic you choose. I promise that if you do this, over time, you will start to notice vast improvements in yourself.
We say here all the time that “success leaves clues.” Everyone knows that successful people do successful things, but the average person does not do what it takes to be truly better than the average. It is my hope that after reading this blog, you will take the initiative to challenge yourself and take small but consistent steps to be better.
