As the classic saying goes, “New year, new me!”.
As just about everyone else does, I like to start off the year with a few New Year’s resolutions. They’ve ranged in years past from working out more, to starting to journal, to becoming more organized. Some habits have stuck, but like most, I fall out of routine after a few weeks and slide back into my old ways. (Often under the guise of “not having enough time.”)
The truth of the matter is, I did/do have the time… I just used the time for other activities. In economics, there’s a saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch,” which means that everything has a cost. I often find myself saying “yes” to things far more often than I should, believing that I can handle it all. In reality, by saying yes to more lessons or work, I was also saying no to more time at home with my wife or no to having time to do things like journal, work out, or practice my organization skills.
We all have a limited amount of time to do the things that we want. So, saying yes to hanging out with friends might also be saying no to getting a quality throwing session in. Or saying yes to getting in your throwing might be saying no to my usual 90-minute workout, and just doing a 30-minute one instead.
I am not sitting here telling you that you can’t hang out with friends or have long workouts or that your life must be consumed by baseball. However, as Nick Saban has famously said, “But the fact of the matter is, if you want to be good, you really don’t have a lot of choices because it takes what it takes. You have to do what you have to do to be successful.” Whatever your number one priority in life is, make sure that you don’t let a lesser priority take time away from that.
For me, this year will be about saying no to more things so that I can say yes to things that are higher on my priority list.
