In professional wrestling, it’s WrestleMania season! So, I thought it would be an appropriate time to tell a story from WWE that all of you reading this blog can learn from. Betting on yourself is easy to say, but it takes a lot of courage and bravery to do. Oftentimes, it is necessary to bet on yourself to take the leaps you need in life. I’m going to share a story about a man who bet on himself and reaped the benefits… A WWE superstar and professional wrestler who has grown into one of my favorites due to his compelling story.
If you keep up with pro wrestling and WWE, you know that last year was WrestleMania 40. Now, in the main event of WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes faced off against Roman Reigns. Cody had been in the WWE before, but he was more of a mid-card superstar and never really the main event. So, where did he exactly bet on himself?
In May 2016, Cody left the WWE because he felt like he wasn’t getting the push he deserved in the company. At the time, it was unheard of for superstars to request a release, as there weren’t many big-time pro wrestling promotions. Cody went on to the independent scene and began rebranding himself, making himself a much bigger name. While in the independent scene, a pro wrestling journalist was asked if he believed an independent pro wrestling event could sell 10,000 tickets… He claimed not anytime soon. Cody took this as a challenge, not only as a wrestler but also as an organizer of the entire event. He (and others) went on to sell more than 10,000 tickets in less than an hour, again making himself a much bigger name and a much bigger draw. The betting on himself didn’t stop there. He then helped create an entirely new company in 2019, where he was the face in and out of the ring. He was also the Executive Vice President of the company known as “AEW.”
By 2022, Cody Rhodes was a much, much bigger name than when he left the WWE in 2016. He returned to the WWE in 2022 at WrestleMania 38 and received one of the best pops a WrestleMania return had ever seen. Fast forward to WrestleMania 40 last April, and it was the second year in a row that Cody Rhodes’ main event was the biggest event of the year. This time, however, he became the WWE Champion. This April, he will be main-eventing WrestleMania for the third year in a row—the face of the WWE.
The message I want you to take away from this story is that sometimes it is necessary to bet on yourself if you want to take the leaps in your life. While the unknown can be scary, it is important to have the courage and bravery to believe in yourself. Believe that if you can work your tail off, betting on yourself will be the best bet you’ve ever made!
