Whether you’re in the middle of your high school or college season, or just beginning your professional season, it can feel very long and be a bit of a grind. In my experience, here are a few things that helped me get through the season mentally and emotionally.
At the beginning of the season, the excitement and joy of starting another year can be unmatched. However, the “buzz” from the beginning of the season can begin to wear off as it progresses, especially if you are not in the right frame of mind throughout the year. Being present with every game, practice, pitch, and rep can help prevent burnout. Not thinking too much about the past or future can also help throughout the year. Stay present in the moment at all times, both on and off the baseball field.
Another thing that helped me was being 100% in tune whenever I was on the field and keeping my emotions from the field at the field. Personally, I struggled with internalizing the game. If I played or practiced poorly, I would feel bad. If I played or practiced well, I would feel good. It’s important to leave your emotions out of it. This is especially important to prevent a roller coaster of emotions when you’re off the field. Trying to stay even keel throughout the whole year can help you mentally and emotionally during the course of the season. Now, I understand that it is easier said than done… However, just like anything else, if you practice it more, you’ll become better over time.
Also, having hobbies outside of baseball to help get your mind off the sport can be beneficial—whether watching a TV show or listening to your favorite podcast. In my experience, building LEGOS® was therapeutic for me and helped me be at ease. It was a unique hobby I had picked up, but it got my mind off the game for a while, and I would try to just be in the moment of what I was building.
Baseball can be a very mentally taxing game, and the season can be a very mentally taxing season. Making sure you have certain things to fall back on in terms of hobbies and practices can help you enjoy the season more and perform better throughout the year!
