Raising The Standard

By Kolten Smith –

With our Summer Program finishing up, the rest of the TBR staff and I have time to reflect on how it went—the successes and the things we could do better. Overall, the Summer Program and the Elite Pitchers Boot Camps went phenomenally. This summer, we helped 100+ athletes achieve a healthier arm (which is always priority number one) while also giving them a hyper-personalized plan to take with them after their on-site training is completed. This plan includes how to keep improving their arm health, velocity, command, off-speed pitches, mobility, and increasing their athleticism. At TBR, we know we have mastered the process of creating a personalized plan for athletes and providing them with remote support when they return home. Even though we are elite at these things, we must always ask ourselves: “How can we raise the standard?”

We are always looking to improve all of our events at TBR, including the EPBC, Summer Program, private lessons, and all of the others. For me, in particular as the Events Coordinator, I often ask myself, “How can I improve the experience for our clients?” Oftentimes, the answer to this question comes in the form of improving my hospitality skills. Generally, this means making our clients feel more comfortable and welcome and helping them as much as possible throughout the event. (Basically, making their time at the Ranch a 5-star experience.) After every event, I ask myself what I can do for future events to raise the standard and make the experience even better. I can almost always find one or two things to improve on and then make that adjustment for the next camp.

The main reason I want to talk about raising standards is to discuss how you can apply it personally. Whether it is baseball training, your job, your family, or something else that is important to you, you should always be looking to improve that aspect of your life. Since we are a baseball training facility, I will use baseball as an example. Whenever you or your son trains, always be mindful of how each training session can be 1% better than the last. Sometimes, this improvement will happen naturally, especially if you are trying something new. Over time, though, this quick improvement will start to decrease. Once this happens, then consistent, meticulous practice is the key to sustained improvement. This requires you to raise your standard each and every time you train. For example, during your warm-up and arm care, you can either go through the motions and be distracted, or you can keep your standards high and give 100%. If you do the latter, over time, this diligent work will prove to be a difference-maker in your career.

Raising your standards in the most important aspects of your life is incredibly beneficial to improving over time. If you can keep your standards high consistently, you will be successful at whatever you do. I challenge you to figure out what aspect of your life is most important and then raise your standards accordingly!
