In-season Checkpoints

By Pierce Jones –

As the season has picked up for most, many have struggled to create balance throughout their school, training, practices, and games. This is a very busy time, and without certain checkpoints or processes, it can become difficult to filter in and out of what needs to be done and what is most important to you. Below, I have gone through five key areas that can significantly help you navigate throughout this time of year and avoid the downward spiral of feeling overwhelmed.

  1. Consistency: By establishing a routine, you create a consistent schedule for yourself. Consistency is crucial for developing good habits and ensuring that you are dedicating enough time and effort to your school, practices, training, and games. Consistency also helps you to avoid that “burnout” feeling as your workload, oftentimes, will continue to increase throughout the season.

  1. Goal Setting: Planning out your week in advance helps you to set achievable goals for yourself. From a training standpoint, breaking down your throwing into light, medium, and heavy days can put you in a significantly better position for the health of your arm and body. Although it is important to set goals for the season and your development, it is just as important to set goals outside of baseball to create balance.

  1. Time Management: Before your week gets started and you are in the rush of all the moving parts of school and practices, try and write everything out for how your schedule is broken down by time. Oftentimes, we become overwhelmed or feel we have lost time, but by allocating specific times for your top priorities, you can ensure that you are making the most of your day and maximizing your productivity.

  1. Preparation: Planning out your week in advance allows you to prepare for each task that needs to be conquered. You can ensure that you are putting yourself in the best scenarios and able to stay right on top of the main tasks, all while being able to mentally prepare yourself for the challenges ahead.

  1. Adaptability: Having a routine and plan in place also allows you to be adaptable. If you need to adjust your training schedule due to unforeseen circumstances, you can do so without completely disrupting your routine. Oftentimes, the plan does not always go as we intended, and we might have an outing on the mound that was not expected, you have to close a game with minimal warning, or maybe you have to finish up a big project at school. No matter what, adaptability helps you to stay on track and continue making progress toward your goals.

As always, for those who are in Durathro™, please reach out with any questions or concerns that you have or need help navigating through this time of year. As it is a key component to have us help you work through your throwing progressions throughout the year, we are also here to help you with any planning that you may need or speed bumps that can take place.
