I Wish I Didn’t Need Reminding

By Jill E. Wolforth –

This week brought an unexpected reminder of something most of us know, but far too easily forget.

Our daughter-in-law, Alexa, recently lost her grandmother, Billie Fontenot, unexpectedly. We attended Billie’s funeral this week, and as I sat there listening to people talk about her life, her family and the impact she had on those around her, I found myself thinking about how quickly life can change.

We tend to live as if there will always be more time.

More time for the people we love. More time to take the trip. More time to say what needs to be said. More time to appreciate where we are before rushing toward whatever comes next.

And yet, when you sit at a funeral and listen to people talk about someone’s life, very little of what gets mentioned has anything to do with accomplishments, awards, money or status. People talk about how that person made them feel. They remember the times they showed up, the way they cared for others, the laughter they brought and the impact they made.

It was a reminder to be present. To count our blessings while we have them. And to think about the impact we are making on the people around us.

Baseball families can easily get caught up in what comes next. The next season. The next team. The next velocity number. The next opportunity. The next level.

There is nothing wrong with that ambition. We believe deeply in growth, improvement and pursuing what you are capable of becoming.

But here at the Texas Baseball Ranch®, we also realize we are not simply helping to create better baseball players. We have an opportunity to help develop better young men who, in turn, become better teammates, better sons and, eventually, better husbands, fathers and neighbors.

That matters to us.

The radar gun will eventually be put away. The games will end. Baseball itself will one day become a collection of memories.

Who these young men become and the impact they have on the people around them will last much longer.

So while we will continue encouraging our athletes to chase big goals, work hard and pursue the next level, this week I encourage you to join me in being a little more intentional about looking around instead of always looking ahead.

And to remember that the impact we make on others may ultimately last far longer than many of the things we spend so much time chasing.
