As the school year begins and various sports kick off—whether it’s football, volleyball, fall baseball, or something else—it is important to understand that you are going to face setbacks.
Whether it is on the field, in the weight room, or in everyday life, failure is coming. It is not reserved for certain individuals—it happens to everyone, even the elite of the elite.
But here is the difference: what separates great athletes from average ones is how they respond.
Some of the greats who I’ve seen handle failure well are people like C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and many others.
I remember a time last year when Stroud had a string of bad weeks, but the way he handled it was almost as impressive as any record-breaking performance. The things he said at the time taught me many valuable lessons that I still try to carry with me in my everyday life.
I believe they can help you, too.
When you’ve trained so hard for something, given it everything you’ve got, left no stone unturned—and you fail—you may feel small.
You may feel like you worked for nothing or are a failure.
It’s important to realize that’s just life—and life doesn’t owe you anything.
I like to look at it as there is something greater for you in store. While it may be hard to see in the moment, I believe the quicker you can understand that, the more successful you will be in the future and the better you will be at handling failure.
If you expect to succeed at the highest of highs, you must be ready also to embrace the lowest of lows.
Nothing worth working your tail off for comes easy, and you shouldn’t expect it to be without disappointments.
Stroud said that you have to be joyful in those moments of adversity. When you take the long road or face setbacks along the way, success will feel that much better in the long run because of it.
The things that you can control every day are your attitude and your effort. Leave no stone unturned in your pursuit of whatever goal(s) you may have—both on and off the field.
Don’t let anybody question your heart or your work ethic when it comes to your dreams.
Failures are going to come. That is inevitable.
Control what you can, excel at handling adversity and failures, and you will be in a great position to succeed.
Not just in baseball.
But in life.
