Embracing Failure

By Isaiah Trevino –

Over the weekend, I watched football, and C.J. Stroud (Houston Texans quarterback) had probably one of his worst games this season. In fact, this season hasn’t been nearly as good as his rookie season last year. The expectations were big because of his past season, and as a fan of Stroud, it’s tough to watch him not perform as well. It reminded me of how he has handled failure in the past, especially in his college career. Obviously, there always has to be a loser in every game. This really defines you not only as an athlete but especially as a person. This brings me to the topic I wanted to discuss here: Handling failure and adversity

Listening to C.J. Stroud after the loss was very inspiring. His handling of the loss was nothing short of incredible, and hearing him speak afterward taught me a few lessons.

When you train so hard for something and give everything you have to a particular goal, leaving no stone unturned… And you fail… You may feel small. You may feel like you’re working for nothing or are a failure. It’s important to just “eat” it in these moments. It’s life, and life doesn’t owe you anything. I like to look at it instead as there is something greater for you in store. While that may be hard to see in the moment, I believe the quicker you can understand that, the more successful you will be in the future. You will be better at handling failure.

If you expect to succeed at the highest of highs, you must be ready also to embrace the lowest of lows. Nothing worth working your tail off for comes easy, and you shouldn’t expect it to be or without failures. Stroud said that you have to be joyful in those moments of adversity. When you take the long road or have failures along the way, success will feel so much better.

The things that you can control every day are your attitude and your effort. Leave no stone unturned in your preparation for whatever goal you may have inside and outside of the game of baseball. Don’t let anybody question your heart or your work ethic when it comes to your dreams.

Failures are going to come; that is inevitable. Control what you can and become the best at handling adversity and failures. You will be in a greater position to succeed not only in baseball but, more importantly, in life.
