Can You Afford to Take Time Off?

By Jonathan Massey-

Life is unfair. There are players that have access to better information, better equipment, better coaching, etc., yet the one thing equal to everyone… is time. We are all given 24 hours in a day to use as we see fit, and those who can maximize those hours will be able to overcome the obstacles in their way.

Now, there are people in the baseball community that advocate for players to take 1 to 3 months off every year. My blog here is not to say that I’d advocate for playing year-round because I don’t. In fact, I believe every player needs time away from competition in order to make adjustments without the burden of needing to perform.

But let’s do some math…

If a player takes 1 month of training off from the ages of 12 through 18, he’ll lose 7 months of training. If he takes 2 months off, he’ll lose 14 months or a year and 2 months, and 3 months off is a whopping 21 months of lost time or almost 2 years of training! That also doesn’t include the amount of time it would take to ramp the arm back into shape in a healthy manner.

The margin of success in the baseball world is as small as it has ever been. The difference between making your varsity team or not could be as little as 2 mph, and the difference between a Division 1 scholarship and getting drafted could be as little as 3 mph.

With the margins this close, a player needs every advantage they can get. When other guys are taking their time away from training, that is a prime opportunity for you to start catching up and eventually pass them.
