What’s Behind the Curtain of Focus?

By Carson Ellis –

What’s behind the curtain of focus?

What’s the focus of what you are doing right at this moment?  What’s the focus for the task that you are about to do?

These questions are asked because we can all get caught up in overanalyzing. Essentially, we may be trying to do too much and focus on too many things all at once. When you try to focus and do too many things at once, what ends up happening? Do you actually accomplish the goal that you originally started?

I would bet that you end up down a rabbit hole and either lose focus or have to backtrack and restart.

Now, let’s think about this idea in our training and in-game pitching.

I was talking with Garrett the other day, and we were discussing our guys performing the torque drill. The idea we discussed was the primary reason why we do torque drills. The whole focus of torques is to work on the unloading of the pelvis, with an emphasis on the back hip.

This is where the focus part of the drill comes in.

So many of our guys will complete a torque rep and then ask, “Coach, how did my arm action look?” That’s when I usually say, “Uh, I don’t know. I was focusing on your lower half unloading.”

This is where we, as a group—whether you’re an athlete, coach, spectator, mother, father, spouse, CEO, etc.—need to keep the main thing the main thing. When you are doing something, pause and consider what the absolute primary focus is and what you are trying to accomplish in that moment.

This concept of identifying the focus or objective carries over into in-game pitching as well.

Most of you reading this have been in a game where parents or fans are yelling, there’s a runner on second base, and the coach is trying to tell you what to do. The game speeds up. You feel rushed. You feel like you have to be perfect. Everything starts happening too fast.

So what is this, in the grand scheme of things?

Let’s simplify it.

This is a construct of focus.

This is where you need to step off, take a deep breath, and think about what the main focus is in that exact moment. Is it trying to pick the runner off at second? Is it throwing a fastball inside because the hitter struggles with that pitch?

It doesn’t matter what the main focus is, as long as you can switch your mind to focus on one task instead of focusing on multiple things at once.

So, with these two examples, what’s actually behind the curtain of focus?

Once that curtain is pulled back, you get true growth. Growth happens in training (and in life) when you’re able to identify the area of focus, commit to it fully, and evaluate only that focus until it’s time to move on to the next.
