The Most Powerful Word in the Dictionary

By Jonathan Massey –

In case you were wondering, there are 470,000 words in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. This begs the question… how did I decide which was the most powerful word for this blog?

Is it the longest word — pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis?

Nope.

Actually, the word I chose is only 3 letters long. But those 3 letters, when used in the right way, can make such an impact. The most powerful word for me is the word “yet”.

Why is yet the most powerful word in the English language? Because when you add yet to the end of a sentence, you completely change the connotation of that sentence.

You can say, “I don’t understand it,” or you can say, “I don’t understand it YET”. (I know which one I would prefer to hear as a teacher.)

You could say, “I don’t have a good curveball,” or you could say, “I don’t have a good curveball yet”.

I don’t throw enough strikes… or I don’t throw enough strikes yet.

I don’t throw hard… or I don’t throw hard yet.

When you add the word “yet” to the end of a sentence, you change the story you’re telling yourself.  You change the story from “I lack the necessary skill” to “it’s only a matter of time until I acquire said skill”. This takes you from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

Having a growth mindset is the most powerful tool a person can have. Having a growth mindset means you don’t believe that you are ever locked into your current capabilities.

So, the next time you find yourself saying you can’t do something, just remember that little but powerful word — YET. Add it to the end of the statement to get yourself back into a growth mindset. Because if you can develop a growth mindset, there isn’t anything you can’t accomplish.
