By Jonathan Massey –
It happens about once every 6-8 weeks, I get done with running the night classes here at the Texas Baseball Ranch®, think back on the class, and say to myself, “We have to revisit the drills.”
Now, I would say 50% of the players in the night class have been training at the Ranch for at least 8 months, and probably 75% have been training with us for at least 4 months. So why the need to revisit the drills? It wasn’t like they didn’t know the drills or hadn’t been coached on how to do the drills properly, they had simply let their drill work become an activity.
The Navy SEALs have a saying, “People do not rise to the occasion… they sink to the level of their training.” Or as I am amending, “You sink to the level of your standards.”That’s what the players in class needed, a reminder of the high standard we have when it comes to focus and execution of the drills.
The next class, that’s exactly what we did. We spent the entire class reviewing the drills and reminding the players about the high standards we have when it comes to drill work. Guess what? In the weeks since that night, nearly every player who has been working on velocity this offseason has broken their personal record.
Now, will this be the last time I have to have this conversation? Of course not. As human beings, we constantly slip and start to slide toward the path of least resistance. Even the best of us. The difference is that the best are quicker to right the ship and reraise their standards.
So, if you are experiencing a plateau or are feeling stagnant, take a look at your standards and raise them. The higher your standards, the better your process will be, and the better your results will be.
