“Professing to Be Wise, They Became Fools: Romans 1:22”

By Coach Ron Wolforth –

As the 2025 baseball season begins, I’d like to share with you a daily prayer of mine. Each day, while I often pray for many different things and different people, I routinely end my prayers with a plea that the Lord will grant me patience, humility, and wisdom.

Not knowledge, skill, or ability.

Why?

I recognized a long time ago that the more I learned, the more I realized how little I actually knew. The more I achieved, the more I began to understand that achievement alone was hollow and temporary.

Just look at the current lives of Sean “Diddy” Combs, Blake Lively, Meghan Markle, and countless other superstars and celebrities. Many of their lives are an absolute mess! Therefore, life is obviously not just about money, fame, accolades, achievements, or awards.

It’s about so much more than that.

Now, please don’t misunderstand me. Goals, drive, and ambition to achieve are VERY good things. It’s just that by themselves… They’ll never be enough. We all search from time to time for a deeper meaning or purpose in our lives.

I realized that no matter how much knowledge I gained, I would ALWAYS be slightly short of the complete truth. ALWAYS.

I’ve said it many times in the past couple of years… I begin each day by accepting that I very well may be slightly mistaken or incomplete in my current understanding of the truth in any one area.

And therefore, I never ask for knowledge. I ask instead for wisdom, patience, and humility.

My request is very similar to “The Serenity Prayer”:

“God, grant me the serenity

To accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.”

Wisdom is far different than knowledge.

Returning this conversation to baseball and training… I find three issues very troubling in “Baseball Americana 2025.”

I liken it to my title today from “Romans…”

“Professing to be wise, they became fools.”

-King James version, Romans 1:22-32

  1. A One-Size-Fits-All Philosophy… For All Things Training
  2. Pitch Data as The Master and Not the Servant
  3. The Secret to Velocity Creation Is “Mass = Gas”

It seems I come across one of these issues every single day.

I routinely run across coaches and trainers who are absolutely certain they have “ideal” pitching mechanics all figured out. This group includes many of the current nationally known “gurus” who post criticism of others on social media.

They have one specific way that they believe is clearly THE way. Then, when an athlete who is successful, healthy, and durable over a long period and who moves contrary to their “ideal” model is pointed out, they simply shrug it off as a “genetic freak,” an oddity, or an aberration.

Many of these people rail against what they think we do at the Ranch, and refer to it as “marketing,” “wild,” “crazy,” “arrogant,” and/or “ridiculous.”

The battle will continue to rage for the foreseeable future… And I… I will continue to pray for patience, humility, and wisdom. The last thing I want to happen is while professing to be wise… I become a fool.

May you and your loved ones have a very successful and productive 2025!

Until next week,

Stay Curious and Keep Fighting the Good Fight!
