Breaking New Ground Through Goals

By Pierce Jones –

The offseason is here, and everyone is eager to ramp up and strive to take their game to the next level. The offseason is a critical time for most athletes, not just in baseball, but in any sport. This is a time when you can create separation from your peers and become the outlier that is necessary to be noticed by your coach or the coaches looking to fill college rosters. Oftentimes, the offseason can become dreadful, and we can find ourselves losing focus on what we are truly wanting to accomplish. This is where things can fall apart. Having and setting goals seems like something so simple, but we often don’t use them to our advantage or go about it in the right way.

First and foremost, it is important to sit down and think about what could stop you from reaching your desired goals, and how you can eliminate those stop signs along the way. With that, the more precise and detailed you can be when thinking of what could stop you will be of much more benefit. If you can identify this from the very beginning, it prevents you from really getting into your offseason training and then having a speed bump in the road that could interrupt you or discourage you from the direction you were headed.

Having these issues identified early on in the process is of huge benefit to you now that you can sit down and think about the goals you want to achieve. When having these goals in mind, it is important to know exactly what you want. Write these goals down and set dates for them. It is important to have short-term goals, as well as long-term goals, but writing them down and tracking your progress throughout this offseason can be a motivator in itself. I would suggest putting these goals you have written down somewhere that you can see them every day and constantly be reminded of them while asking yourself if you are doing exactly what you need to be doing to trend in the right direction.

After your goals have been identified and you are certain of exactly what you want, it is time to figure out your plan of action and have all the resources (or have done your due diligence) on what is going to get you there while having a plan that you trust and can follow. Of course, plans can change and be edited along the way, but without something in front of you that you can always refer back to and trust, you can find yourself going in circles and becoming stagnant in your training.

I’m wishing everyone a great and healthy offseason and am looking forward to watching and hearing about everyone’s development. It’s time to separate yourself from the pack and be the outlier that can truly change your game. If you are uncertain of how to accomplish these goals or find yourself in a rut, please reach out to us here at The Ranch! We would be happy to help and would love to watch you grow.
