Making A Great Leader

By Pierce Jones –

Leadership is a characteristic that can be challenging and often has gray areas that can be hard to interpret. What makes someone a successful leader? Is it power? Is it through experience? Is it by just simply being appointed to the position?

Unfortunately, I feel that people are currently struggling in this area and are unsure how to navigate the process. I am certain that there are fantastic leaders out there who just can’t quite step up or who feel they need to stay back and let someone tell them when it’s time. The truth is, I feel that everyone has been a part of a team or organization at some point where they see the current leader in position and struggle to make a connection, feel understood, or maybe even feel safe underneath them. I would say it is entirely normal to have this happen, but not normal to always stand back and watch that culture deteriorate.

Simon Sinek is someone who, I believe, lays out great points on leadership. He expresses how to truly make those around you trust you and feel, not just safe, but welcomed and want to continue to come back for more. I would like to share the points that Simon makes and strongly encourage you to take action in whatever situation/team/organization you may be in to help boost them and be the leader that everyone can look to.

As I said earlier, many people think you must be appointed to a leadership position. Simon provides a great point that leadership is a choice, not a rank. This could not be more true. There are many teams and organizations out there in the world today where the leader is not always the best player or who has been there the longest, but someone who thrives in that position and can genuinely bring out the best in everyone around them. The question then leads to, “How is that done?”.

You do that through various points:

  • Sacrificing so others can gain
  • Creating a great environment
  • Providing opportunities
  • Education
  • Discipline
  • Building self-confidence
  • Providing the ability to try and fail so that those around you can continue to achieve more

These seem so simple but oftentimes, they get overlooked and passed on in the fast-paced world that we live in. Sit back and think about situations you have had in the past with different teams or even workplaces. Which experiences were great, and how did they incorporate the list above? Then think back on the ones that were not so great and see if they were lacking in these areas. Find how you can continue to move forward, incorporate these into your everyday life with those around you, and become the leader you want to be led by.
