As I have mentioned in one or two of my past posts, I am on the email list to receive newsletters from Brad McLeod of SealgrinderPT.com. One of the recent emails I received reminds me of a saying Coach Wolforth uses frequently, “If you do what everybody else does, you will get what everybody else gets; which most of the time is not much.” But Brad put a different twist on it. He stated, “If you want to keep getting what you’ve been getting – keep on doing what you’re doing. But if you want to see change – You have to break the pattern. NOW.”
I often hear from guys that they do their Ranch warm-up when no else on their team does a warm-up. They do the arm care exercises, before and after the game. They use the Connection Ball on a regular basis. But they are not seeing any real improvements. The problem is not that they are not doing enough, the problem is that they are just going through the motions in the things that they are doing. They have to break that pattern.
If you want to see change, you can’t just do more than everyone else; you have to improve on what you do on a daily basis as well. You cannot just go through the motions and think just because you are doing this or you are doing that, that you will automatically improve. You must be committed to getting better at every little thing every day. No matter how mundane the activity is, you must try to do that activity better each and every time you perform it.
Remember the old saying, “Good is the enemy of great”? I think that holds true with how you perform your day-to-day activities. The warm-up may be good, or the arm care exercise may be good, or the drill may be good, but what makes you great is the level of focus and effort you give while performing them.
So if you want to see change, you must break the pattern of just going through the motions. True gains are only made when you do what others won’t, and do that with extreme focus and effort every single day.
